Reason Y is a solo artist venture based in West Seattle, Washington created by Dustin Hedger. Dustin grew up in Gig Harbor, WA, where his passion for DIY punk/rock-n-roll production and performance germinated. After connecting with the spirit, culture and energy of performers and patrons of the small clubs of the Puget Sound region, he bought his first guitar, a Fernandes 4-string bass after his 16th birthday from the coolest music store ever known to rockers from this area, Sluggo Music. Jack Dolan, the proprietor of this iconic establishment in Tacoma, generously gave him lessons, videos and cassette tapes to study free of charge, and to him Dustin is eternally indebted. Track 9, Dolan Ditty, of Reason Y's debut album, Screaming Through the Confines is in dedication to this most generous and knowledgeable man.
Shortly after learning the basics to bass playing, Dustin joined a talented, yet ephemeral alternative effort called the Remnants, composed of 4 mates from Gig Harbor High School, Jeff Kvinsland, Andy James and Shalen Parker. Shalen went on to form the band Lincoln Brigade, from Oregon, that signed with Island Records in the 1990's.
Inspired by Shalen and his other talented band mates, Dustin formed a band with college dorm mates Tim Matthews, Eric Blackman and Todd Harris at Western Washington University. After a few gigs, other commitments steered Dustin away from the band, which later put out an album and performed under the name Jerkwater. Since then, Dustin has been composing and playing mainly privately or for small audiences for, let's say, a few years.
Reason Y is a product of several years of generating material assembled to bring to music and to light some of the experiences and circumstances that have shaped the artist or have affected the world as a whole. It is the result of collaboration with talented people on whose shoulders he has stood, especially those of the mixer and music-maker who was there every step of the way, Dan Ross of Melbourne, Australia.
