A digital library (also called virtual or electronic) is a type of library in which various materials are collected in digital format. These can be texts, visual materials, audio or video, being stored in electronic format.
Without changing the essence of the library activities, the new technologies bring about a series of changes related first and foremost to the fact that the tools that are put into the hands of librarians are different and they must learn to handle them.
The dynamic link between librarians and information technology requires new functions of libraries and librarians, new forms of collaboration with other institutions (including publishers) and a more sophisticated human and electronic interface with intellectual resources. A particularly important factor to consider is the architecture of the building. Computerization, in fact, implies the existence of an automated library system.
