Tutoring: Private tutoring is an extremely beneficial opportunity for students to improve academic ability. If needed, an Informal Reading Inventory will decipher if there is a reading issue that needs to be addressed (all children will be screened for Dyslexia) and then a tutoring schedule is arranged. I provide all materials necessary with very specific instructions for daily practice at home. When children work one-on-one with me, we make rapid progress. Sessions last 50 minutes which is followed by a brief meeting (5-10 minutes) with the parent to discuss recent progress and at home practice.
Consulting: As a consultant I pride myself on providing expert advice to advance teachers, parents, and caregivers with the knowledge base to push their students to succeed. I bring forth the skill and knowledge as an English Literacy teacher and Reading Specialist, I make professional development in literacy approachable with follow through coaching in the classroom.
Workshops: Student achievement is linked to numerous factors. Learning new strategies to improve the quality of instruction is a critical component. My workshops enable parents, teachers, and administrators to improve how we address literacy needs in the home and at the school level. Workshops can be presented at PTO meetings, Professional Development meetings, and Administrative meetings to help educational stake holders understand how to meet the needs of different students and excel them to the next level in their literate lives.
The Importance of Reading at Home
This workshop will focus on children who are having trouble with comprehension and the importance of reading at home. Parents will be given a look into the statistics of how oral fluency differs from comprehension and how they can best support building comprehension.
The Reluctant Reader
This workshop will focus on children who are having trouble with reading. We'll cover recent brain research, delays that may be creating problems, and different approaches necessary to reach each child.
Engaging Boys in Reading
Boys like lessons that end in a product. They like competitive games and motor activity. This workshop will focus on how to get boys to read literature and address unsolved problems. Combining teamwork, competition, and self-direction is the key.
Dealing with Academic Anxiety
The difference between crumbling in tears at the first sign of adversity or dealing with the stress and figuring out how to move forward to some sort of resolution. This workshop will focus on:
-What To Look For
-Interventions
-Classroom Environment
- Interactions
Reading Diagnostics/Informal Reading Inventories: Informal Reading Inventories (IRI's) are diagnostic assessments designed to determine current reading levels. IRI's provide valuable information in the areas students need explicit strategy based instruction. IRI's guide in the process of designing instruction to address individual students' noted strengths and needs. Cost $125
Book Clubs: Students engage in intensive reading, writing, and critical thinking through Socratic Inquiry book clubs. Summer book clubs promote academic motivation, build self-confidence, and create social connections which accelerates skills and prevents summer reading loss. These book clubs last for 4 weeks and meet twice a week for an hour.. Cost $250 per student
Test Preparation: Test preparation or exam preparation is a tutoring service with a curriculum that is followed designed to increase students' performance on standardized tests. Using a cohesive approach ensures teens will learn the strategies to engage in each type of exam question. In addition, they will focus on the specific skill area they need to improve. I work on helping kids and teens manage the stress and pressure they might encounter and raise crucial test scores. Examples of these tests include entrance examinations used for admissions to college (e.g. SAT, ACT) and qualifying exams for admission to gifted programs. There are many resources available for students to prepare for the real exam. Mock exams, mind maps, study guides, explicit reading strategies, and writing structures. My test prep will help students prepare for that feeling, to acclimate them to the test and it's oddities. Familiarizing students with the format and analyzing the question and answer structure is important so that when they encounter the test they are prepared and confident.
Tutor rates vary by hour depending on child's grade level and ability ranging from $30-$50 an hour. Rates decrease if a package or bundle of sessions are booked. There is a discount monthly rate if you prefer tutoring all year. Payments are expected in advance when booked. I accept Cash, SQUARE, and Paypal for credit cards. All sessions will be held out of the Cherry Hill Library. Parents must remain on the premises and sign off on tutor session sheets. In the event of a cancellation or "no-show" makeup sessions are available at the availability of the tutor for the next week. Often a few parents get together to split and divide the cost for tutoring sessions. There are additional discounts for group/small group sessions! In group sessions I take up to 10 students and small groups up to 5 students.
