In case you were wondering who was behind this project, we thought we should introduce ourselves :] We are two Cantonese women in the Bay Area who love to read, care about Asian and Pacific Islander communities and issues, and have been curious about sustainable resistance in the streets, within our communities, and in our own analyses.
The idea for a readathon came through a desire to direct our financial resources toward local and national organizations who are doing frontline work supporting and defending impacted communities during today's political climate. A readathon is an easy tool to bring our friends and family together to stay informed, connected, and supported when engagement in current issues can make us fearful and isolated.
As daughters of Chinese migrants, we also wanted to invite our larger Asian and Pacific Islander community to engage in the critical role that we bring to the broader racial justice movement, as well as supporting organizations working with API communities. May is National Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage month, so what better timing? We hope you join us!

Hey! I'm Carol Lee. I have a list of about 70 books to read this year, and the list keeps on growing.
Reading is resistance to me because it gives us words to experiences we have not yet learned to articulate. Reading is resistance because it helps us locate our current reality within the context of a shared history. Reading is resistance because it gives us access to dialog with, and learn from, thousands of thinkers, artists, and revolutionaries.
Reading is resistance because, in a world that seeks to sanitize history, we can sit at the feet of storytellers who teach us to remember the good and the bad, and help us imagine and create a better world.
Reading is resistance because it reminds us that we are not alone.
Hey! I'm Sarah Lee. Reading is resistance because it builds empathy across borders, physical and imaginary, upheld by powers and policies. Reading is resistance because it liberates us to see each other as more full, complex human beings, while giving us critical, historical, and creative contexts to resist the structures that dehumanize us.
I'm also an introvert and reading is resistance because it helps me stay energized during this political climate! Currently I work with Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity as the San Francisco Sanctuary Coordinator.
