Be Proactive, explains how taking control of our own lives and not being influenced by our environment in terms of our responses is very important. In this chapter, Covey emphasizes that proactive people are responsible for their own choices and do not blame external factors for their actions or feelings. They are aware that between stimulus and response, there is freedom to choose, and that is where personal power lies.
The main quote from this chapter is: “Being proactive means more than just taking initiative. It means that as human beings, we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.” This quote explains that the core of proactivity is self-responsibility and initiative.
The values implied in this habit include responsibility, independence, and integrity. Proactive people are not easily influenced by their environment or momentary emotions, but they will do everything based on the values and principles they believe in. They are able to manage their reactions in difficult situations and under pressure and remain focused on their long-term goals.
As we were an ELT Students, this habit aligns well with the teacher's role in seeking solutions to classroom challenges, taking initiative to improve teaching methods, and not blaming students or the system when facing difficulties.
Being proactive enables an english teacher to create a positive, inspiring learning environment and encourage students to become independent learners. Proactive habits also help teachers to continue to develop professionally and set a real example for students about the importance of taking control of their learning and their lives.
