Mawa Project is an initiative (funded by Global Youth Mobilization; a total of US$ 5,000.00) with a comprehensive and innovative approach to address the burden of diseases and injury in public schools and communities. The project aims at creating the enabling environment required for schools and communities to respond to the injuries and diseases in absence of a medical professional.
The approach is to focus on capacity building and institutional strengthening targeting public schools and youth clubs.
The project clearly dwells on the capacity and tools of the primary schools in Blantyre rural. Training teachers on first aid and sexual reproductive is at the core of the project.
Reach Out for Life’s MAWA Project is a health program that is being implemented to respond to different health challenges with an overall goal of attaining a self-aware, resourceful and innovative future generation. It intends to create a proactive community in dealing with prevailing health issues at community level by the community itself through capacity building, health campaigns and community outreach.
Through Mawa Project, ROFL conducted a Blantyre Rural Primary School Teachers First Aid Training at Dzunga Teachers Development Centre in Chileka. The activity project was being implemented responding to challenges surrounding young people in accessing health services and information within Chileka area.
Specifically, the training intended to:
1. Train teachers in basic first aid response and management to respond to emergencies at school level.
2. Certify teachers as First Aid Responders.
3. Promote sexual health rights and safeguarding.
The training took place at Dzunga Teacher Development Centre (TDC) with 10 teachers from 5 schools within 3 education zones of Chileka, selecting 2teachers from each school.
The training commenced on the 20th through 23rd of October, 2021 commencing from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm each day. The participants were fully trained in a Life Saver’s International First Aid Course (LIFAC), and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). Facilitation of the training was done by St John Ambulance International, a First Aid service organization in Malawi and Reach Out for Life.
Collaborative partnership, especially between health and educational sectors, are essential for schools to improve both health and education outcomes.
Reach out for Life hosted a stokeholders with health centers representatives and HSAs to work hand in hand with the trained teachers.
