What type of funding does UTRGV offer for students?

Funding opportunity for research-based Master's programs:

  • If you are applying to UTRGV, the graduate school offers the Presidential Graduate Assistantship to students in research-oriented programs that help partially cover tuition and provides a stipend. This is a very competitive opportunity and you must contact the director of your program of interest in order to be considered.

  • There are other funding opportunities for Master's students at UTRGV. Students in the M.A. Clinical Psychology have opportunities to work as a Graduate Research Assistantship, or Graduate Teaching Assistantship. You can search for job opportunities through the UTRGV career postings or through Handshake.

  • Other students may have employment outside of school in order to help fund their education.

Funding for Doctoral Programs

  • The UTRGV Clinical Psychology PhD program provides admitted students a stipend for up to 5 years (if funding is available) for working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant or Graduate Research assistant. The stipend for 2020-21 was $20,000. The program also provides a scholarship to cover tuition costs for up to 5 years (if funding is available). The financial support package may change year to year.

Funding for Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling programs:

  • UTRGV offers a couple of scholarships for students who are interested in the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling program.

  • RSA Scholarship is a funding opportunity that is open to graduate students in the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling program. The scholarship provides financial support for student tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend. For more information contact the program director.

  • KC International Scholarship is a scholarship that is focused on providing financial assistance to international students. The scholarship is based on community service, leadership roles, career choice, academic success, and application content. General funding opportunity for graduate students at UTRGV:

  • The Graduate Dean's Traditional Scholarship is a new scholarship that is open to newly admitted master's students or doctoral students. It is a one-time award of $2,000 offered to graduate students who have been unconditionally admitted and enroll in a minimum of 6 hours.

What type of services does UTRGV offer for students who are writing their personal statements or CVs?

For all UTRGV students, the Writing Center currently offers free, one-on-one thirty minute video-call sessions where you can get feedback on your personal statement and/or your CV. You may show them a draft, but this is not necessary; they also offer sessions where they can help you brainstorm and put your ideas together, so you do not need to have anything written to request a session. What other services does UTRGV offer to help me in shaping my career?

The UTRGV Career Center offers services such as:

  • Help for explore various graduate schools

  • Graduate fairs where you can network and learn more about different graduate programs

  • individual advising on guiding you in your job search, graduate school search, etc.

    • They can help you learn about admission tests, scholarships, and even preparing for interviews.

  • If you need professional attire for job interviews or conferences, your can fill out their Career Closet Request Form and you can receive up to three professional garments per semester. These garments would be free of charge and you won't need to return them.

How can I get involved in psychology at UTRGV?

Getting involved in research labs is a great way to gain research experience before applying to a graduate program.

Another way to gain valuable information and resources about psychology is by joining student organizations and clubs.

  • The Psychology Club at UTRGV is a student organization that is open to all students interested in psychology, regardless of major. Some activities are organized trips to regional and national psychology conferences, guest speakers, community service projects, and research activities. There are two chapters of The Psychology Club - Edinburg and Brownsville Campus

  • Psi Chi at UTRGV is an international psychology honor society. Membership is based on academic excellence. Some of the requirements are: an overall 3.0 GPA, completion of 3 semesters, completion of 9 semesters hours of psychology courses, and a minimum of a 3.0 in psychology courses.

  • Psychology Student Alliance for Research at UTRGV (PSAR) is an organization that aims to bring together like-minded undergraduate and graduate students involved in psychological research with the intention of sharing their knowledge and expertise with aspiring researchers in need of guidance and mentoring.

What resources does UTRGV offer to help pay for the GRE?

  • GRE/GMAT Test Fee Scholarship is offered by the UTRGV Graduate College that provides $205-$250 depending on the test taken for admission. Both domestic and international graduate students may qualify. Keep in mind that you must meet eligibility requirements.
