Excursion to Konavle and Cavtat

Day trip to Konavle and Cavtat includes visit to Sokol kula, Stećci, lunch at Vinica Monković and a guided tour of Cavtat. Please inform us in advance of any dietary preferences.


Sokol kula

Built on the inaccessible rock above Konavle field, the Sokol fortress dominates surrounding area for centuries. It was first mentioned in 1391, although recent archaeological findings date the fortress to the copper age 2300 BC. Fortress was abandoned in the early 18th century, and extensively restored in the past years. The fortress offers a small museum with archaeological findings from the site, as well as great views to the Konavle field.


Stećci - medieval tombstones (UNESCO protected areas)

Medieval tombstones in the village of Dubravka. St Barbara church in the vicinity of Sokol kula were built between 12th and 16th century. These limestone tombstones feature a wide range of decorative motifs and inscriptions. Stećci - medieval tombstones is one of the 30 sites inscribed in the UNESCO word heritage list.

Lunch at Vinica Monković

The lunch will be in the protected landscape of river Ljuta, in the restaurant Vinica Monković with authentic Konavle’s and Dubrovnik’s dainties.

Cavtat

Cavtat is the largest and the only urban center in Konavle that has been built up deliberately. Located on the Rat peninsula, which, together with the Sustjepan peninsula, surrounds the well protected and accessible bay. In its harmonious architecture, one can observe the centuries-old natural, spiritual and material ties to the Dubrovnik Republic.

Bukovac House

Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922) a Croatian impressionist painter was born in Cavtat. His childhood home is a typical urban house from the turn of the eighteenth century, a stone structure of two floors with a small garden on the side of the south façade and a spacious back garden on its north. The house has its own history and “prehistory” – it has been continuously inhabited since ancient times.

Mausoleum of the Račić Family

The Mausoleum of the famous Cavtat shipbuilding family, Račić was built by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883 – 1962) in 1921 on the site of the former 15th century Chapel of St. Rocco, according to the will of the testatrix, Marija Račić. It was built from white, Brač stone in the form of a dome and throughout the building there is not a single piece of wood or any other material besides bronze used to make the door and the bell.
