Enactive Iconic Abstract
Who is my neighbor ? asked by an expert in the law . In response the master teacher ( Jesus Christ Son of God ) responded using a parable commonly known as the Good Samaritan . At the end of the parable Jesus asked "Which of these three do you think was neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? " The parable created an enactive /iconic experience , for which the expert in the law ( student ) was or could relate to . The question asked by the teacher invited the listener to think ; where he had to compare the behavior of the characters in the story , do an evaluation and make a judgment . All these skills are considered to be higher order thinking skills which is exactly what the society and 21st century job requires .
Mathematics concepts , principles and content must first be introduce to the learner via a concrete experience . Project Based Learning / Problem Based Learning is a vehicle to facilitate this experience . This will aid in the development of critical thinking skills , communication skills , collaborative skills and creative skills .
Having students interacting with pictures such as unlabeled drawing of cubes to measure with rulers to determine volume and surface area ; this helps to further extend the enactive experience .
Students may prepare journals of their experiences and observations recorded. Textbooks then become their resource material to facilitate this experience .
A flipped classroom will accommodate all the three experiences and the development of the 4C'S skills mention above . My idea of teaching is all embed in these experience and housed in the flipped classroom . With this combination learning will always take place .
