The United Nations dedicated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day in the 1990’s. This aligns with the first Earth Day that was held on April 22, 1970. This global event happens during the Spring Equinox. This annual celebration honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations.
United Nations celebrates May 20 as World Bee Day because it coincides with the birthday of the man who pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in the 18th century. This day honors the honeybee industry, which bee pollination accounts for $15 Billion in added crop value.
Queue the 1978 song, "Bicycle Race" by Queen. This day recognizes "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle... a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health".
Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
Bees and other pollinators, are increasingly under threat from human activities. If this trend continues, nutritious crops, such as fruits, nuts and many vegetable crops will be substituted increasingly by staple crops like rice, corn and potatoes, eventually resulting in an imbalanced diet.
World Bicycle Day, celebrated on June 3, draws attention to the benefits of using the bicycle for both its positive sustainable impacts on our environment and it's benefits on the individuals' physical health.
