One thing that the pandemic has made us realize is the joy of freedom and being able to move around at any time and any place that we choose. We lost this privilege for over 14 months due to the COVID 19 pandemic and we all felt like we were losing our minds. Our dogs on the other hand have this restriction as a way of life for them.
We realized the cruelty of zoos by restricting movements because we saw what effects they had on us both emotionally and physically. That means that this year for the second Christmas in a row we will want the same things that all our domestic animals want; freedom. This December we will go into the holidays governed by the Government regulations yet again but at least we have experienced a significant relaxation in restrictions. Our dogs don't have that luxury.
POOR BOUNDARY PLANNING
One of the limitations for dogs is with owners who have poor fencing planning. By that, I mean they have a fence for all intents and purposes but it is not practical for their dog. A way to know that your fence is not practical for your dog is that you have to watch where he or she is every time you open the gate and have to keep them chained up to a wall or secure object. This is a level of cruelty that has become acceptable amongst many dog owners but morally we know that it is not right.
The problem is that removing the chain means that your dog will run into the street and cause more chaos outside every time you open the gate. As installers of fencing in a country with one of the highest crime rates, it is interesting to note that most people fence their properties to keep their dogs in rather than keep burglars out. With our company, I would put the average at about 50% of all domestic installations relating to the management of the homeowner's dog. Unfortunately, this is still not enough as the number of dogs that run away when gates are opened as well as those that get into accidents is still a very high proportion.
A CHEAP AND RELIABLE OPTION
The good news is that keeping your dog safe while allowing it to have the freedom to run around doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can spend about R5000 on a solution to help you keep your dog secure and have the freedom to run around in your yard. The days of chasing your dog around the neighborhood and fighting with that grumpy neighbour can very quickly come to an end.
PLACES THAT DO THIS WELL
A place that has stood out in terms of managing dogs well is Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming. Besides the excellent work that they do by finding dogs new homes they also have a dog hotel if you are traveling. During the time that we have worked with them, they have ticked all the boxes in terms of how to treat dogs well while allowing a controlled environment for new dogs (that also have to isolate) and existing dogs to ensure that the dogs remain healthy. Visitors and workers are also not overwhelmed by having dogs jump on top of them when they come through. This is an excellent case study.
