Solar Eclipse Watch Party!

April 8, 2024

All families welcome to this free, outdoor event to celebrate the Great American Solar Eclipse!

LOCATIONS:

Mitchell & Williams Schools 2:30-4:00pm @ Mitchell School (back of the school)

Merrill, LaLiberte, & Raynham Middle Schools 2:30-4:00pm @ Bettencourt Field (the field between Merrill & LaLiberte)

Bridgewater Middle School 2:30-4:00pm @ BMS lower fields (near tennis courts)

(rain location for all elementary schools and BMS is BR High School; rain location for RMS is inside at RMS)

Early dismissal information for elementary school students and registration for middle school students was sent home through BRRSD the week of March 18th. Middle school students will arrive to their watch party immediately after dismissal. Families may join the party at any time, including after the regular school day ends.

Homeschool families and other families with children who live in our towns are welcome to join too.  High school students and community members, we need your help volunteering - see links below to sign up. We can't wait to see you all there!

IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION for outdoor events:

Mitchell School Watch Party: First park at the Conant Community Health Center, Bridgewater Senior Center, and associated pickleball courts on Wally Krueger Way. There is a short path that connects this area to the Mitchell School fields where the watch party will be held. If these lots are full, parking may occur within the South Drive neighborhood that is across the street from the Mitchell School. A third parking area is Marathon Park on Crescent Street, which is a 15 minute walk to Mitchell School, and it is supposed to be a beautiful day for a walk! There should be NO parking at the Mitchell School in order to allow for a smooth dismissal process. There should be NO parking on South Street.

Merrill, LaLiberte, & Raynham Watch Party @ Bettencourt Field: Participants should use the Raynham Middle School side parking lot. To park in this lot, use the side access road only to avoid RMS dismissal traffic. Do NOT use the RMS main parking lots or roads between 2:00pm and 2:45pm. There should be NO parking on Darrington Drive or Titicut Road. If the school lots fill, parking can take place in the Pleasant Field neighborhood, which begins on Michael Road.

Bridgewater Middle School Watch Party: First find a spot in the Central Administration parking lot on the left side of the building near the tennis courts. If this lot is full, the parking lot on the right side of the building near the main entrance to BMS may be used. Participants can also park at the closest high school lots to BMS.

For all: Participants parked illegally may be towed or fined. Do not block entrances to driveways, businesses, schools, or other entities. It is essential that emergency vehicles be able to pass through easily. As the areas around the watch party will be busy, please watch for pedestrians while driving. Pedestrians, please cross streets and parking areas carefully and stop to look for vehicles before crossing.

It will take MUCH planning, volunteer action, and safety considerations. Even if you don't know much about a solar eclipse, we need a crew of excited volunteers to help with all aspects of this event!

Solar Eclipse Chaser Program

Calling all kid scientists… Become a Solar Eclipse "Chaser" with RaynWater STEAM!

Any child in grades 3-8 with a love of astronomy or anything science is welcome! (Limited to 50 participants.)

What will we do? We will meet together for 3 training sessions, plus you will need to view the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. RaynWater STEAM will be hosting a solar eclipse watch party in our BRRSD elementary and middle schools, you may watch the eclipse from home (live or livestream), or your family may travel to the path of totality or to be with other people.

What will my child receive? Each child will receive a certificate and commemorative items including 2024 solar eclipse viewing glasses, unique pinhole viewer, and a magnet/keychain. Plus they will be the expert in your family on solar eclipses! Participants must attend all 3 training sessions, view the eclipse, and send us pictures with a written/audio statement or video about what the eclipse experience was like for them, to be eligible for these awards.

Dates and locations:

We welcome all children and the cost is free. However, we would appreciate if you are able to sponsor your child for $10 to help us acquire the awards we plan to give (non-refundable). Thank you for your generosity!

Things To Know About an Eclipse

Is it safe to watch a solar eclipse? YES!

There are several safe ways to watch a solar eclipse. Our goal is to provide solar eclipse glasses for all children and staff in the BRRSD. This is the safest way to view the eclipse. We will also make pinhole viewers and learn more about how eclipses happen leading up to and during the watch party.

Additional resources on eclipses and safe viewing can be found at the following links:

Exploratorium: How to Safely View a Solar Eclipse

What will the eclipse look like in Massachusetts?

Although we will not see a total eclipse here in Massachusetts, the sun will be about 91% covered by the moon on April 8.  That is impressive! Some families might travel to northern New England where it can be seen in totality. See a map of the eclipse path here.

The next solar eclipse that will sweep across large areas of the United States won't happen until 2045! Viewing a solar eclipse as a child has the ability to generate awe and fascination with science, possibly sparking an interest in STEM that can last a lifetime!

In Massachusetts, our maximum coverage will look like the top row, third from left, and/or bottom row, second from left.

Thank you to our sponsors!

Thank you to the following groups, individuals, and organizations who have made a donation or grant toward our solar eclipse events, and for those giving their time and support!
