Who's the rat in your life?
...Or is it you?
RAT is an upcoming student production at the University of Toledo that aims to challenge what is possible in the world of theater-making and creativity while also raising awareness on addiction and mental health.
RAT is a full-length stage play that shares the story of Maurice Benowitz, a wildlife ranger with the perfect, happy life any man could dream of. When one thing after the other goes wrong and things seem to spiral out of his control, he ends up losing everything he's worked for after discovering the wrong way to cope with grief.
Take one look at our cast, and you might just notice that our leading man is actually our leading lady. In this premiere production of RAT, Isabella Herrera portrays Maurice, giving us a unique expression of this character— not removing manhood from Maurice, but not removing femininity from our actress. Not only this, but our cast as a whole is very gender-diverse; changing the perspective of this show without changing the narrative, making it an even more powerful story. With RAT highlighting the dangers of misogyny and the crisis of men's mental health, this story is sure to be impactful to anyone, regardless of identity.
CONTENT ADVISORY
This play covers sensitive topics around addiction, suicide, rape, violence, and mental health. There will also be use of graphic special effects makeup briefly in one scene. There is also use of foul and insulting language, as well as aggressive volume and shouting at times. If these topics and imagery would potentially be too upsetting or distressing to you, consider not attending the show. It is also advised to not bring children to attend.
