Through the use of transitions limiting action, the viewer never feels separated from characters throughout the film and, as a result, fosters an intimacy with them. Distance between scene and viewer is diminished from shooting in the round. Moreover, the feeling of sitting in the same room as the characters is tangible by the mastery of the low-angle shot. Captured through close-ups, facial expressions allude to emotions that cannot be said out-loud. In addition, this camera technique allows realistically depicted conversations to flow undisrupted. Character dialogue of both verbal and nonverbal types teaches the audience to appreciate the subtlety of life represented in each scene. Ozu's film is a refreshingly visceral story, providing a unique alternative to the action-led style of Hollywood storytelling.
