Tokyo Story is a 1953 Japanese drama film, directed by Yasujiro Ozu. Centered on the dialogues that occur between family members, Tokyo Story is a minimalistic yet nuanced film. Critically acclaimed both in Japan and throughout the world, it was even voted the best film of all time in the British film magazine Sight & Sound in 2012.
The combination of unique camera placement, transitions, and use of 360-degree space, all work to immerse the spectator in the dialogues–or sometimes the lack thereof–between the family members in Tokyo Story. This website explores how Director Ozu uses these three techniques in the film.
