The Ramsay Rams travel to Clanton Friday night to face the Chilton County Tigers in the Class 5A, Region 4 opener for both programs. Ramsay enters the matchup 1-1 and looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season.
Rams Looking for a Bounce-Back Win
Ramsay opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion with a 35-13 victory over Jackson-Olin before suffering a 40-21 road loss at McAdory last Friday. Now Coach Ronnie Jackson and the Rams turn their attention to Region 4. Ramsay enters a new-look region this season after finishing 6-4 overall and 5-1 in region play in 2025. The Rams have established themselves as one of Alabama's most consistent Class 5A programs under Jackson, including the school's 2022 state championship. Friday represents the first step toward another playoff run.
Know the Opponent: Chilton County
Chilton County enters the matchup looking for an early-season breakthrough under second-year head coach Merritt Bowden. The Tigers went 1-9 last season while competing in Class 6A before moving into Class 5A, Region 4 alongside Ramsay this fall. Chilton County's 2025 offense averaged just 8.7 points per game, but the Tigers showed more offensive production in their 2026 opener, scoring 29 points in a 44-29 loss to Elmore County. The Tigers are 0-2 after losing to Marbury 35-7 last week. Playing at Tiger Stadium gives Chilton County an opportunity to start region play with a statement, which means Ramsay can't afford to overlook the Tigers.
A New Region Race Begins
Ramsay finds itself in one of the more intriguing Class 5A regions in Alabama this season. Region 4 includes Ramsay, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Helena, Pelham, Chelsea, Calera and Chilton County. That makes every region victory valuable. Ramsay has reached the playoffs in each of Jackson's first five seasons as head coach, and the road toward extending that streak begins Friday night in Clanton. The Rams haven't faced Chilton County since 2013, when the Tigers won 20-13. Chilton County leads the brief all-time series 2-1. Thirteen years later, it's a new Ramsay program, a new region and a new opportunity. The road to the playoffs starts now. Go Rams!
