11th Alexander von Humboldt Award-Winning Program
Brief description:
Focus: "Quantum Science: from Foundations to Instrumentation"
Quantum science has been challenging our view of the microscopic world for more than a century now, and not even all questions are settled today. Roughly half a century ago it became possible to not only observe but also control simple quantum systems. Nowadays we are witnessing the transformation of quantum concepts into ever more applications, ranging from extremely sensitive sensors to novel forms of computation. Humboldt Award winners from around the world are deeply involved in shaping this process and will give their view of the present state of the art in further exploring and exploiting the quantum world. The award winner’s forum offers a unique opportunity especially for young scientists to obtain a broad view of quantum science which covers topics from condensed matter physics to photonics and more.
Some of the luminaries, for example, Prof. Markus Aspelmeyer, Jean-Michel Raimond, Hans Bachor, Steve Cundiff, Rainer Blatt, Kenji Ohmori, Jelena Vuckovic, Atac Imamoglu (to name a few) were invited to present their recent research. They shared their insights on the future directions of quantum technologies, while rest of us were fortunate to interact with them in this three days event organized by the Humboldt Foundation and presented our works as posters in front of them.
The program also included educational tours. We visited Brühler Palace at Augustusburg, Radio Telescope Centre at Effelsberg, etc.
