ASL:

HI NAME MY #RAINEY JACKSON.

THIRD-YEAR OSU I.

MAJOR MY WHAT? POLITICAL SCIENCE.

SPECIALIZE I, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.

English:

I took my first American Sign Language class at Grapevine High School just outside of Dallas, Texas, and I've taken ASL 1-3 at OSU. Initially, I took this class because I wanted to pull myself out of my comfort zone and get involved within the Franklin County Community that I've been living in for 3 years now. But, I hope that throughout my ePortfolio you can see how much my initial reasons to take ASL 4189 evolved over my service journey.

MY MISSION STATEMENT

I want to bring about policy that creates lasting and liberating change in the United States as well as within United States foreign affairs.

I stand for the abolition of the systems that have foundations in racism, colorism, ableism, and sexism/misogyny.

I take action by engaging with the community and building foundational knowledge in undergraduate school in order to establish myself in American and foreign politics.

January 2023

LEARNING GOALS:

Strengthening my appreciation for the Deaf experience, in connection to my prior knowledge of Deaf Culture.

Learn more about the Deaf community within Franklin County - a county I have been living in as a college student for 2 (almost 3) years.

By the end of my collaboration with CSL,

I expect to gain confidence in service-learning situations and conversational ASL.

I expect to have a more reflective attitude toward community service of all types, considering different perspectives and my own privilege to GET to serve.

SERVICE GOALS:

Expand my real-life observation of Deaf Culture through involvement in the Deaf Community in and around the Columbus area.

By the end of my collaboration with CSL,

I expect to become more comfortable with the specific aspect of community service in a new environment.

I expect to feel more inclined to engage - to a much greater extent - with the Franklin County community as a whole.

April 2023

As my service-learning journey comes to a close, I realize I have learned (and been confronted with) many things I had no idea I would.

Recently, since working with my group presentation partners, I have been confronted with my own assumptions. Specifically about technology created for the Deaf Community (like video relay services)  and my lack of knowledge on how to use them. And I was asked WHY the CSL staff asked me to make a phone call for one of the clients.

I have gained a lot of confidence in serving the community and getting involved. Westerville, OH has become a safe haven for me, I love traveling to the CSL site and engaging with the clients and staff.

My ASL conversational skills have certainly improved throughout my service-learning journey. Especially from that first day when I misunderstood much of what was signed to me by the clients and staff, I have gotten more confident not only in my signing but with asking questions and sticking to sentence structure when I get flustered.
