How did my level of comfort interacting with Deaf individuals change throughout my service-learning journey?Â
At the start of my service-learning journey:
I am somewhat comfortable with signing with SUPERVISORS/STAFF.
I am between somewhat comfortable and somewhat uncomfortable UNDERSTANDING the signing of supervisors/staff.
I am extremely comfortable asking for clarification on signs from supervisors/staff. (ONLY SOMEWHAT COMFORTABLE)
I am somewhat comfortable signing with clients at CSL.
I am somewhat comfortable UNDERSTANDING the signing of clients at CSL.
I am between somewhat comfortable and extremely comfortable asking for clarification from clients at CSL.
I am somewhat uncomfortable approaching a signer I haven't met yet. (EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE)
After completing my journey:
Looking back at what I had filled out at the very beginning of my service-learning journey, I think I was not honest with myself when it came to how comfortable I was asking for clarification from the CSL supervisors and staff and how comfortable I was approaching a signer I have never met.
After completing 40.5 service hours at CSL, I think I am much closer to "extremely" comfortable with most of my answers. However, I still think that because I sometimes still get flustered occasionally I would not argue I am fully "extremely comfortable".
As for approaching a signer I haven't met before, I think although I am slightly more comfortable, it still makes me really nervous when they start signing with me. When I can warm up to someone I feel way more confident in my signing and receptive skills.
Signs I wish I knew:
