Great Midland System

Great Midland System is the product of a 1987 merger between the Detroit Southern Railroad Company and the Ohio Midland Railroad. The Cleveland, OH based Ohio Midland was acquired by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad in 1979. The P&LE and OHM would not officially merge until 1982, but afterwards the companies fell into financial trouble. After reorganizing, OHM was acquired by the Great Midland Holdings Company on February 1st, 1982. GM Holdings continued to operate the OHM under it's own identity. In 1984, GM Holdings reached an agreement to lease the Detroit Southern Railroad and Detroit Terminal Railroad. Both roads would continue to operate seperatly until a merger could be completed. On October 2nd, 1987, operations on OHM, DS and DTRR were consolidated and Great Midland System name and livery would be applied to all equipment after this date. Both roads continued to run on paper and in their reporting marks until October 2nd, 1991 when both OHM and DS were officially mergers into the GMD.
