The Great Lakes Republic Belt Railroad is owned by 6 of the 8 states that it operates in. The Great Lakes Republic was an organization formed by the state governors of Michigan, Indiana and Illinois in 1860. Later Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York joined in 1863. The organization's purpose was to promote inter-state relations and strengthen their stance. In light of the civil war, the Great Lakes Republic was able to officially gain state sponsorship in 1863. In 1871, the Great Lakes Republic received state funding of $30 million. Part of this funding went to purchasing a railroad in Ohio, that already had charters to build east to Buffalo, NY and west to Chicago. This railroad was known as the Great Lakes Southern. The railroad would be completed in 1875. It began turning a profit in 1883, money which was returned to the states and serves to this day as a revenue stream.
In 1958 the Great Lakes Republic purchased another railroad, the Tennessee and Indiana Northern RR. Both GLS and TIN would began operating under a new identity the Great Lakes Republic Belt Rail System. GLRB purchased the PH&D Railroad in 1970. More commonly known as the Republic Belt, would eventually merge the 3 railroads in 1990.
The railroad runs as a corporation controlled by the Great Lakes Republic Committee. The Committee receives state funding that it returns back to the states from the revenue generated.
