The word 'Defence' should be avoided ... the personnel must be trained to act offensively from the tactical point of view. A title that embodies these requirements is

The Depot should be located within convenient distance from London ... Belton Park, Grantham, is suitable in every way."

HM King George VI signed a Royal Warrant on 6 January 1942 and the RAF Regiment formed at Belton on 1 February 1942. In August 1946 the Depot moved to RAF Catterick. National Trust volunteers from Belton House present their research on the history of the Belton Depot.

Marshal of the Royal Air Force Hugh Montague Trenchard reviews RAF Regiment personnel at Belton Park 1st January 1943

During WWI, Trenchard commanded the Royal Flying Corps in France and then became Commander of the Independent Air Force in June 1918. The latter was designed to strategically bomb German railways, airfields and industrial centres. Trenchard was well versed in overcoming inter-service rivalry for new strategies. It was Lord Trenchard's belief that to support bombers in the Middle East, Armoured Car Companies should be formed under Royal Air Force control.
