Commercial Prints

The following photographic prints were bought on Ebay from The Aviation Photo Company, without restriction as to their use. The photographer was Ian MacFarlane, now deceased, who was a long term employee and photographer at Newcastle / Woolsington Airport. He was also at RAF Ouston for six months in the winter of 1965-66, during the time it became the temporary 'Newcastle Airport' due to runway works at Woolsington. Other examples of Ian Macfarlane's Ouston photos can be found on the "AirlineFan" website https://www.airlinefan.com/photosearch.php?aircraft=&airline=&airport=Ouston&photographer=&category=&category2=&year=&sort_order=date+desc&limit=16&thumbnails=&start=0&submit=Show+me+the+Photos%21

On the 'AirlineFan' website Ian Macfarlane has captioned two of the above photos to say that the aircraft came in to collect an urgent consignment of de-icing fluid, which can be seen in the black drums in the photos. All four aircraft belong to the Luftwaffe transport squadron LTG62, as identified by the Elephant badge on the nose. Three of the aircraft have red 'spiral' decoration on the propellor spinners, but on GB+101 the 'spiral' is white, plus the serial number is repeated on the nose on a white hexagon.

The colour scheme of all four aircraft is the (then) standard NATO camouflage of dark green and dark sea grey on top, with medium grey undersides. The high visibility 'day-glo' extremities are 'day-glo' orange, somewhat faded by sunlight on three of the aircraft, but newly painted and a deep orange/red 'day-glo' colour on GB+101.

The Nord Noratlas was a French designed military freighter which was a standard NATO transport in the 1960's, powered by Bristol Centaurus radial engines. Luftwaffe examples were common visitors to Newcastle / Woolsington Airport in 1965-6.
