Solar Astronomy & Space Weather
Earth-Sun Connections and Space Weather
Heliophysics is the science of understanding the Sun and its interactions with the Earth and the solar system. Beside gravitational effects and its light, the Sun's plasma wind and Earth's magnetosphere also interacts, producing effects such as disturbance in the geomagnetic field, aurora, and interestingly, seismic activity on the Earth. The main explanation for this is unknown, but more data on earthquakes and solar activity correlation will be a big clue. Space weather is the research on environment in solar wind with capabilities of impacting lives on Earth, especially in electronic equipment.
Solar Activity & Solar Storm
The most significant occurrence that occur in space weather condition is solar activity that comprises of solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CME) and Solar Energetic Particles (SEP) which are unforeseeable. Solar flares are energy release and burst of electromagnetic radiation that is related with the sunspots. SEP consists of high energy protons and ions from the Sun. CME is abnormally intense event producing magnetized plasma originating from the Sun's corona.
Solar Radio Bursts (SRB)
SRB is the phenomenon where the Sun radiates it radio energy towards interplanetary medium. SRBs are usually short-lived and strong fluctuations of radiations and have a time dependent frequency space. There are five types of SRBs, each classified based on the burst characteristics, duration, and frequency range.
