INDIVIDUAL SKETCHES

The lime yellow color of the irregular off-shoulder top symbolizes the chemical liquid of radiation. The tight, long dress is tie-dyed with see-through sheer fabric, which represents the leakage of radiation into the ocean. The bruise red embellishment on the right shoulder symbolizes the diseases caused by radiation, aiming to raise awareness of the harm it can cause. The black socks represent the worry about the unknown negative effects of radiation.

Inspiration was taken from the movie "Annihilation"

The 4 hands are inspired by genetic changes caused by radiation. Genetic changes can cause various diseases and abnormalities in the body, one of which is having more or less than five fingers. The purpose of surrounding the body is to express that the issue of radiation  is closely related to us and will affect our health, hoping to make people pay more attention to this issue. In addition, the colorful colors of the hands are inspired by the radiation effect range map.

The research on the mutations in human bodies induced by radioactive captivated my interest throughout the research process. Given that diverse body forms have always been a part of my works, the sufferings endured by the victims deeply affected me. Therefore, I embarked on experiments involving saturated colour waves and distorted human bodies.

The selected design possess a bulky and irregular configuration,with a vivid interplay of saturated and complementary colours. To create this contorted form, the framework of the dress consists of bent wires enveloped in neon green fabric, interconnected by mesh fabric. 3D printing technology is one of the methods to realise this design.

The design is inspired by the biohazard warning label. It is a sport bra. The materials suggested are all durable, elastics in both directions and have good recovery. The colours are very bright which imitate the light given out from radioactive substances. As it is an active wear, it is also important to have functionality. That is why I chose fabric with elasticity and breathability. Also, to prevent the bra from bursting open, I added semi-transparent nylon elastane in the centre to increase the strength and to make the bra more stable that it is less likely to move around on the body. I also add two pieces of nylon elastane on the back to make it more breathable when doing sports.

The inspiration for this design comes from mushroom clouds that form during a nuclear explosion. Synthetic stuffing (like stuffing found inside plush toys) is used on the top and bottom of the dress to mimic the clouds. There are cutouts on the waist filled in with sheer stretch tulle. This is uses the curves of the waist to emphasize the nuclear explosion. The sides of the dress are multicolored and these vibrant colors represent the dangerous radioactive materials that are detonated into the atmosphere during the nuclear explosion. Some of the seams of the dress are embellished with red jewels. This represents the bloodshed, burns and damage that a nuclear explosion may cause.

The presence of radioactivity evoked within me a connection of mortality. The top alludes to the skeletal structure.

The bottom was inspired by the mushroom cloud for my design because I find the shape is beautiful and modern.
