This is the church that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King pastored and was a key gathering site for the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
If you stand in front of Dexter Ave Baptist Church and look to your left, you'll see this view of the Alabama State Capitol directly across the street.
This monument to the confederacy sits in front of the steps leading into the left side of the capitol building.
Walking through downtown, we encountered two different stories of Montgomery - monuments to the Confederacy in sight of a statue of Rosa Parks, The Alabama State Capitol and the First White House of the Confederacy across the street from Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. The great seal of the city of Montgomery illustrates this dichotomy proclaiming the city as the "Cradle of the Confederacy" and the "Birthplace of Civil Rights."
