The Deep Stuff:
OK. So, it's kind of personal, but the big thing you should know about me is that my Mom died when I was in 5th grade. She died of complications from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She was sick for several years before she died. At first, she continued working as an accountant. And then she got a cane. Then she left work. Then she was in a wheel chair. Then she had to stay in bed. Then she had to be in a hospital bed.
It goes without saying that her sickness and eventual death has had a HUGE impact on my life. Here's how I think it impacted me the most:
- I want kids to be happy and not have bad things happen to them - I became a teacher to give my students a safe and engaging learning environment. I know that if they get a good education then they will be able to have the type of life they want and be happy.
- I have empathy - Having a sick Mom and then no Mom at all made me feel very different from other people. I try to remember that feeling when I work with people. I want to be kind to others.
- I work hard - I was raised by my Dad. He is a mensch. He always keeps his word. If he says he's going to do something, he does it. I try to be the same. He always told me and my little brother that it doesn't matter what we did in life, we should just try to do the best we can at that. So now I'm a teacher and I work hard to be the best teacher I can be.
