Short Vitae


Rachel Lee (she/her) is a Korean national and a Ph.D. candidate in Economics at the University of Virginia.


Her research interests center on fiscal policy, sovereign debt crises, and debt sustainability. Currently, she is working on her thesis, which uses a quantitative model of sovereign debt crises to study dynamic interactions between fiscal rules and sovereign default. Her work shows how fiscal rules reduce sovereign default likelihood and improve households' welfare.


She organized Women in Economics at the University of Virginia in 2020-2021, fostering an inclusive environment and promoting educational and career success by providing mentorship opportunities. She enjoys getting involved in public services to make the institution a positive and more inclusive workplace.


Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, painting, and playing tennis.
