Richard Davis

Richard Davis had a very busy life. Beside his daily efforts to establish a cropping farm at Waimate, and evangelise in Maori communities, he wrote over 750 pages of letters, and at least 380 pages of journals, comprising some very interesting 'primary source' records of early conversations and interactions between Missionaries and Maori.

As part of the celebrations of the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the Davis family in NZ, we made all of R Davis's voluminous correspondence and journals from 1824-1863 Available online in searchable  .pdf format, to make these records more accessible to readers and researchers. I am now preparing the full set of his Collected Letters and Journals for publication in the Puckey/Davis Chronicles series of volumes.

Our thanks to the Hocken Library, Dunedin, and their helpful staff for making these available.
