George Clarke (Senior) (1798-1875) arrived in the Bay of Islands on La Coquille on 4 April, 1824 and worked as a teacher among the Māori community as a CMS Missionary. He was made Chief Protector of Māori in 1840 after the signing of Te tiriti o Waitangi, until this role was abolished by Governor Grey in 1846, whereupon he returned to the Bay of Islands.
