At the close of the nomination period, candidates came forward for all positions except Western Representative. As a result, nominations have been extended until 5pm on April 3, 2021 for the position of Western Regional Representative.
We are working to confirm nominations for candidates in the remaining positions, and will announce the confirmed candidates by no later than April 4, 2021. As such, nominations have closed for the following positions:
Youth co-representative (co-chair);
Governance representative;
Finance/ admin representative;
Communications/ social media representative;
Western regional representative;
Central regional representative; and
Diaspora representative.
Nominee eligibility
Any Youth Member is eligible to be nominated for any position on the Youth Council with the exception that co-reps must be Band Members of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band in accordance with section 2.2 of these Bylaws;
A Youth Member may not seek nomination for more than one role concurrently; and
Acceptance of a Youth Member's nomination is subject to vetting and approval from the Returning Officer in accordance with principles of the Seven Grandfather Teachings.
Nominations for Youth Council positions will be open for no less than two (2) weeks and must begin after the Returning Officer is appointed.
Each Youth Member who hopes to run for the Youth Council must obtain two (2) nominations from other Youth Members, to be submitted in writing to the Returning Officer with their acceptance of the nomination by the nomination deadline.
The nomination deadline shall be set by the Youth Council each year and shall be no less than two (2) weeks before Election day.
Following the nomination deadline, the Returning Officer shall announce the names of all Candidates for all positions on the Youth Council along with the names of their nominators.
Self-identified Qalipu Mi'kmaq youth between the ages of 14-30 (inclusive) are considered members of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq Youth Network, and are eligible to vote in Qalipu Mi'kmaq Youth Council Elections. The Qalipu Mi'kmaq Youth Network is status-blind: all self-identified Qalipu Mi'kmaq youth are welcome, regardless of formal recognition of Status under the Indian Act. If you are a member of the Qalipu Mi'kmaq Youth Network, please register to vote on or before April 11, 2021.
