Quiet Village Public Library is a small public library in the fictional town of Happy Valley, California. Happy Valley is home to a predominantly middle-class population of approximately 50,000 people and was established in 1987 as a “suburban refuge for people seeking to escape city life and reconnect with nature.” The town has a highly diverse population, with 38% of the population identifying as Asian, 35% as Hispanic/Latino, 17% as White, 8% as Black, and 2% as multiracial or other. The most commonly spoken languages other than English include Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Arabic, and Hindi. Happy Valley is situated at the base of the Catalina Mountains on the outskirts of the Verde National Forest.
The library is located in the Happy Valley Town Center, directly across the street from the Happy Valley Town Hall, post office, and police station. The library is also adjacent to the Rolling Hills Community Center & Park, which is home to the town’s Parks & Recreation department headquarters and boasts 600 acres of rolling green fields for community use, as well as hiking trails that start within the park and expand into the nearby Verde National Forest and up into the Catalina Mountains. Due to its physical location, the Quiet Village Public Library regularly forms, maintains, and strengthens strategic partnerships with other local businesses, institutions, and organizations, which positively affects its ability to provide programs and services at no cost to the community and often at a reduced cost to the library budget.
The library currently employs a staff of 20 people. Due to the small size of the library, there are no strict departmental divisions and all staff are cross-trained to perform a myraid of roles. Quiet Village Public Library takes particular pride in their children's services and programs and they aim to consistently offer vibrant, engaging activities that reflect the community's interests and needs.
