Being a Trainer is tough, and being a Trainer who can inspire the learners to remember and apply the "10% knowledge" they just obtained in class after continuous yawning is like climbing Mount Everest.
Taken from my own story, I used to be a very picky learner who only attended class when the teacher tried to escape boring theory delivery and added more flavors to his/her lesson through activities or discussions. I was once took half of the class outside because the lesson sucked and the next day, the school actually changed the lecturer. Yet, of all of those rebellions, I spent years blaming myself for the inability to absorb classroom materials. Recently, I have found a teacher (Ms. Duong Master Trainer @ TCB) that taught me something that I can remember after months till now. Of course, Ms. Duong used multiple teaching methods to make her class unforgettable. Yet, 2 of her most outstanding ones that at least help my "gold fish" memory finally retain more than it usually does are: Storytelling and Thought Facilitation.
Storytelling is a beauty of human communication. We remember stories told by our grandparents, or from a book or a TV show. Story help us to connect with people and the world around us. It make anything we want to express much more meaningful and thought-provoking.
Here are some examples how you can add Storytelling to your classroom training:
Success and failure story from world class or leading companies, thought leaders
Recent highlighted events
Connection with common movies, cartoons: Impact of Bad Time Management: Cinderella.
Stories from your favorite books or tales
Stories of your life: stories from your own mistakes or successes if it relevant to the context
Thought Facilitation is a term I coined myself after seeking relentlessly on Google how to correctly express "Facilitate to help learners think" but failed. It is where the trainer open the environment for the learners to speak, anything on their mind, have others to contribute and challenge each other. I found this practice super useful and love it even more after watching a Harvard teacher facilitate the discussion of her MBA class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7iwXvBnbIE => God I wanna join too!
Ideas for thought facilitations:
Presentation / Cross presentation
Debate
Pop quiz in fun form
Brainstorms
There 2 techniques work greatly for me and I think it works for lots of people too. I hope to find more teachers, instructors and trainers apply them into their class, bring them to another level and spice up the learning experience further more!
The whole writing is meaningless without a present which I walk my talk.
Here is my first training materials on the topic "Coaching". Of course, I am working on refining the techniques further and make my delivery more engaging. I do wish to add more Storytelling, too.
The key here is "Love" and imagine myself actually teaching and sending 1 key positive message to the audience: Coaching is helping others people to think by themselves. That is why around the materials, I inserted different form of activities, videos and role play to facilitate the learners to think, speak and extract the core understanding by themselves.
