How can we better interact with queer media?
A project by Melanie Grace, Shelby Peebles, Clea Hogan and Ashley Melo Romero
Our group wants to explore the intersection between queer representation and media. As people who consume media, more specifically queer media, on a daily basis, we are interested in how interaction with queer media can be improved. Some of the questions that guide this effort are: What are some common tropes do we generally see play out in queer media or for queer roles? What are people’s familiarity with the term queerbaiting? What are ways that people can become more familiar with queer media and/or improve their relationship with it?
Queer media is media that is centered on people who are part of the LGBTQ community. It is a space where individuals can express their feelings about the progress of queer representation and discuss what can be changed
Intersectionality deals with the intersecting part of a persons identity that deal with race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic class.
What queerbaiting is in the eyes of scholars and queer consumers alike. The dangers and consequences of queerbaiting will also be explored as well as examples of what it may look like.
Language in queer media pertains to what is said within queer media and how it is used to express opinions and also how certain language is used within the LGBTQ+ culture and how it becomes a major part of social trends and norms.
