SPACE DAY

SPACE DAY 2006/2009

WHEN DO YOU DO YOUR BEST THINKING? ? I do my best thinking when I am exercising. One day, while working out at the gym, I got an idea to create a few science experIments and put them on a table for the students to explore. I went home and started to research. That research lasted 9 months and the more I researched, the more exciting activities I developed. When it got a little tricky for me to understand, I would walk to the High School Science lab and sit and talk with Mr. Braithwaite. He would explain the physics to me and then I would break it down to a grade three level. I worked with my team to fundraise and host a most exciting exploration into Space-'SPACE DAY'. They were an amazing group of teachers to work with..Miss Cambridge, Mrs Henderson, Mrs Sears, Mrs Bassett and Mrs Newton.

From a few students working on a few experiments a five centered SPACE DAY was born in 2006. Equipped with their Space passports and wearing T-Shirts imported from NASA they travelled in groups and rotated to these five centers:

1. The Space Experiment Center-featuring experiments related to Space-oreo moon phases, comet’s tails, pop rockets, finding what “G Forces” are, making moon craters by throwing large stones into bowls of flour, flying rockets and so much more.

2. The Space Art Center-Students could paint a picture of an astronaut, create a solar system mural, make a Space helmet,

3. The Space Writing Center-Students had over 100 Space titles to select from and could write in special space shaped books.

4. The Research Center-Here students could access a specially designed website for the Queen’s College students to conduct research about Space.

5. The Space Movie Theater-this is where students were welcomed to watch a Space Movie and eat popcorn.

In 2009, I wanted to develop 'SPACE DAY' on a grander scale. I needed more help to do this. I contacted 2 Astrophysicists and they agreed to participate. A 'SPACE NIGHT' was also featured and the astrophysicists were able to provide a lecture on the Solar System as well as to produce telescopes which all the students got a chance at viewing Saturn and the Moon. It was a most memorable event!

2009 Space Day and Night

This was an updated version of the 2006 brand of Space Day. Two additional centers were created.

1. The Space Math Center-again featuring a website specially created for the students of Queen’s College to solve Space Math problems.

2. The Space Spanish Center-this featured lessons in Spanish and multitudes of fun activities such as games and book making in Spanish.

3. Night-Students returned to school at night to listen to a lecture by an Astrophysicist on the Solar System. They were then taken outside to view Saturn and the Moon through telescopes.

MY MOTIVATION in working this hard to develop this 'SPACE PROGRAM' was to ignite the interest and passion in Space that would propel a student from Queen's College to enter the field of Space Exploration or Aeronautics.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION came from Ambassador John Rood who took pictures of our in-house astronauts. He returned to school with signed pictures of America Astronauts.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK IN THE FIELD OF SPACE EXPLORATION? Read, research and do well in your Science studies. It only takes a small seed of imagination to mushroom into something great. Be curious about Science. Ask Questions. Search for answers.
