The City of Burgos
One of the gems of "Old Castile" in Northern Spain, Burgos is a charming city with a rich history, beautiful architecture, and a lively culture. It is the capital of the Burgos province, the cradle of the Castilian language and culture, offering a glimpse into Spain's past and its enduring traditions.
Burgos has a long history that goes back to Roman times, but it truly flourished during the Middle Ages. As you explore its streets, you'll come across medieval buildings and ancient city walls that transport you to another time.
The city's most famous landmark is its stunning Gothic cathedral, the Catedral de Santa María de Burgos (Saint Mary Cathedral of Burgos). This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts intricate stone carvings, tall spires, and colorful stained glass windows. The Arco de Santa María (Saint Mary arch) is another historical gem, once the main entrance to the city. Decorated with sculptures and steeped in history, it is a reminder of Burgos' medieval past.
The Burgos region is also known for its contributions to the study of human evolution. The Museum of Human Evolution displays archaeological finds from the nearby Archaeological site of Atapuerca, another World Heritage site, which provided the oldest known evidence of hominid settlement in Western Europe.
Throughout the year, Burgos hosts festivals and traditions that showcase its vibrant spirit, such as the Medieval Festival dedicated to the memory of the Cid Campeador, a historical figure from Burgos and the hero of the "Poem of the Cid" (Cantar del mío Cid), the oldest preserved Castilian epic poem. The festival will take place during the workshop and culminate on the following weekend. For more information about the festival, please visit the official website.
