Quaternary Insights: Linking the Past, Present and Future
6th–9th January 2025
The 2025 Quaternary Research Association (QRA) Annual Discussion Meeting is being hosted at Newcastle University.
The theme of the ADM this year is ‘Quaternary Insights: Linking the Past, Present and Future’
To accurately assess anthropogenic impacts on the natural world and to develop robust predictions of future climate change and its consequences, there is a critical need to quantify and characterise the processes, feedbacks, rates, and magnitudes of climate and environmental changes. Continued advancements in the analysis of palaeoarchives and in the modelling of long-term environmental change are pivotal to achieve this. Similarly, modern analogues play a crucial role in constraining the palaeorecord and facilitating accurate interpretations of past processes.
We welcome contributions relating to the broad theme of Quaternary Insights, which can include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
Modern analogues to reconstruct past environmental processes.
Connecting palaeorecords to the instrumental record.
Examining past patterns, rates and magnitudes of change to inform future trajectories.
Investigating human and environmental interactions across a range of past, present and future timescales
EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) - good practice and future directions.
We aim to bring together experts from diverse fields within Quaternary Science to present research on new analytical methods, proxy reconstruction, geomorphology, numerical modelling and geochronology. The overarching goal is to foster collaboration among researchers, pinpoint knowledge gaps, and outline future research directions in Quaternary Science.
6th January: Early- and mid-career workshops, AGM, Wiley keynote speaker and icebreaker
7th–8th January: Poster and oral presentations, EDI discussion panel, keynote speaker and conference dinner
9th January: one-day field trip to Blast Beach, County Durham
