TRANSITIONING

Moving from the Award Scheme to the Achievement Pathways

The Golden Rule - NO YOUTH TO BE DISADVANTAGED

We've all been doing a fantastic job embracing the elements of the (new) Youth Program as they have been introduced.

Many of our Youth Members have already started working towards the Outdoor Adventure Skills and the Special Interest Areas, and are well on their way to fully transitioning to the (new) Youth Program.

There are three pathways that a Scout may choose to take during their remaining time in their current Section, as listed below.

The golden rule, is that we ensure Youth Members are not disadvantaged by the transition. This means that they can choose to finish their current peak award on the old award scheme, or they move across to the new Achievement Pathways with credit for the work they have already completed.

The Transition Pathways are:

1

continue working towards peak award on old award scheme

If a Scout is well on their way to completing their Peak Award under the old Award Scheme, they may continue to do so.

Once the Scout progresses to the next Section, they must start working towards the (new) Youth Program Achievement Pathways.

2

continue working towards peak award on old award scheme with sia's replacing relevant badges

If a Scout has partially transitioned to the (new) Youth Program during the SIA introduction, they can complete their Peak Award following the old Award Scheme requirements, but substituting any relevant badges with a relevant SIA badge, as per the mapping tables.

Once the Scout progresses to the next Section, they must start working towards the (new) Youth Program Achievement Pathways.

3

transition to the (new) youth program achievement pathways

If a Scout would like to fully embrace the new Achievement Pathways, they can swap their old peak award badges for the relevant badge in the (new) Youth Program. A simple online converter tool (S2P) allows the Scout themselves (or an adult) to map which badges they are entitled to under the new Achievement Pathways, based on the work they have already completed.

Once the Scout progresses to the next Section, they continue working towards the (new) Youth Program Achievement Pathways.

This is an online tool for Scouts, or their patrol/unit leader or adult leader, to convert their Award Scheme badges to the new Achievement Pathways.

You are welcome to use and reuse the tool as often as you like.

It doesn’t store or record results in any “official” way.

The tool simply asks which badges you have earned in the old program, and provides a list of relevant awards you have achieved in the Achievement Pathways.

A couple of important notes:

  • You'll notice that not all requirements for the old match the requirements in the new. The programs are built quite differently, so the mapping has been produced to provide the closest conversions as is possible.
  • The OAS conversion is an estimate only. As the OAS is a skills and competency based pathway, each skill should be checked following the 2-up / 2-down process. Scouts who have undergone the bench-marking process during 2019 will have already completed this.
