Qawwali is the Sufi Islam devotional music practiced outside of Dargahs (shrine or tomb). Qawwali is the derived from the Arabic word qul or qaula meaning uttering or speaking. Subsequently qawwal in Arabic is defined as speaking loudly or storytelling, which is often done in Qawwali. The Turkish were the first to use the word Qawwal and the word spread throughout South Asia until those the term qawwal became known for those who sung Qawwali. Qawwali was used for meditation as you warm up slowly you try to regain focus all the while you are constantly distracted by the rhythmic beat of the performance. While part of it was used to be carried out after the death of a saint, its use has gone beyond that. Qawwali creates a celebration tone by using tempo, volume of vocals and body percussion. The lead singer transmits frenzy through the crowd and the instruments, claps, and rhythm in accompaniment enhances the feeling making everyone feel the ecstasy, magical and transcendental.
