Adaptive storytelling games are games that let you pick you own path for a narrative games. These are games like Detroit:Become human, persona V, the walking dead etc. But they can feel limiting as to the direction the game goes in like you try to avoid killing a character but no matter what, they die. For my final year dissertation project, I wanted to create an artefact that demonstrates how far AI can be used in Adaptive Storytelling games. I have created a system where I have set a scenario with an NPC that communicates with an LLM, which I decided to use Gemma2:2b.
This AI generates the story and the options presented to the player to pick, allowing for an unpredictable direction to take the game, which in essence creates unique experiances for each user.
As this is an experimental application, the AI will most likely be bad at carrying on the story, but I hope this shows some potential as to small uses of this in games. By this I mean that it will not replace narrative game fully as I believe that narratives should be created by people who have passion with what they are writing about, but this concept of AI usage in game engine will surely allow for some intuitive use in the future.
The example above is a simple demonstration of picking the same option to reach the fastest end to the story, it can be experimented firther by picking options at random.
