The information provided here is meant as a guide for players not the characters. Though all of this information can be learned from most Pyxis once asked, please be respectful.
No planet could ever house the Pyxis, like sharks we die if we ever stop moving. Our home is amongst the stars, we worn born in it and there we shall die, becoming neighbours with the galaxies, best friends with the nebula.
The Pyxis are a nomadic house, their families are scattered over the many regions of the galaxy and, as such, can be encountered almost anywhere. We know the constellations, spike routes and asteroid belts as better than our own bodies. Our travels lead us to the far reaches of our Sector where we seek to uncover secrets long lost, places ever forgotten, and life forms forever exiled, and through them we hope to learn.
Some may call us weird or curious, and maybe we are. But we pride ourselves on our sense of freedom, our empathy and our wisdom, even if they might make us weird.
What else does a title do than tell the worth of a human, not through their position, but through their deeds.
The Pyxis have abstained from a hierarchical structure, favouring their earned titles over those they were born with. Within the house a title is earned through the work one has done in their life, be they a seeker, the holder of a discovery, an echo or an orator. In a way your title tells us something about you, what you hold dear.
We believe us all to be equal, choosing to rather place trust in the experienced and proven members of our house and choosing to listen instead of shout. There are however a few vocations within our house that will grant you the following titles.
Seekers make up more than 80% of our house. We are born seekers, destined to scour the universe to still our sense of wanderlust, to quench our thirst for knowledge and to fill our ledger with tremendous tales. Many seekers switch their seeker title for their discovery title once they've made their grand discovery but some see value in staying a seeker ever more, whatever their reason may be.
Only a select few ever become an Echo, the elite pilots of House Pyxis. To be an Echo, you may quite well be the most courageous, honorable and outright foolish you can be. Echos make sure that we stay connected no matter how far apart we are. Taking control of high-grade spike drives and moving at speeds unimaginable to most, braving the storms of drive space with the help of our Pyxis grade star charts. Echos risk their life daily to make sure that the family stays whole. You, Echo, take pride in your title, for your piloting skills border on the precognitive at the very least, and your work is irreplaceable.
The work is accident prone however. Most Echo's don't live to become very old, and those who do live often retire early as they become VoidTouched.
The most highly respected of Seekers may at some point be awarded with the title of Orator. As Orator, they are the voice of our house towards the rest of the empire. They make our voices heard and try to advocate our ideals in the social encounters between us, the other houses or other possible factions. Most Orators have already lived a rich life as a Seeker, wishing to help provide the best environment for their fellow Pyxis to flourish.
There are 4 Orators at all times, namely the Orator of the North, East, South and West with a special 5th Orator, the Orator of the Rose.
The 5th Orator, the Orator of the Rose, is not the voice of the people, but the face of the house. The rose is the one other nobles often contact in time of need and the rose also has the tie breaking vote within the house when the four cardinals cannot come to a consensus. It has also been told the the Orator of the Rose is the one who talks to the Master of Space in case space wishes to contact them apparently.
The Orator of the Rose is randomly chosen out of a pool of "willing" representatives at the start of each month, giving everyone an equal chance to bear this burden.
Our travels lead us to to great treasures of knowledge and amazing experiences but our exploration comes with it's dangers. Sometimes our seekers and echos return, but they have lost a part of them on their way. As the weight on their mind became to much they gave up part of their sanity to retain their soul. VoidTouched are treated with respect, the price they paid is a burden upon all of us and their knowledge a warning for the future.
Many of us carry titles such as SolBrewer, LunarFlame and many more alterations. As our noble titles lost their meaning on our house, and self representation became more prevalent, a new trend rose among Seekers. Many of us are in search of great knowledge our through our lives, in the hopes of ever making a Grand Discovery. The tales of such discoveries are passed on through many generations and become a large part of who we are.
Most Seekers gain their title after bringing forth their Grand Discovery at the Annual Moot, astounding us all with their achievement. A Seekers Discovery Title can be nearly anything, some more examples being MarluxMist, Mr.Galigar, TravelingMountain. A good title often ensnares the curiosity of those around them, so that others might be compelled to ask for the tales that they represent.
A Pyxis’ Discovery title is their pride and joy. Making a grand discovery in a nebula mostly explored is an ever more difficult task. Many Seekers are ever searching for their grand discovery, searching for something to call their own and to tie their name to. Once or twice every century a Pyxis comes round with more than one grand discovery, gaining a secondary or even a tertiary title in the process, but these events are increasingly rare.
Once per year all of House Pyxis comes together in an always changing outlandish location. Each year most families race for the honour to find that year's Moot location, holding that honor until it taken from them, or until the retain it, the year after.
The moot it self is a festive, week long event that all members of House Pyxis covet from the moment it is over. We come together to trade our tales, present our discoveries, teach or new ways all under heavy guidance of good booze, exotic food and amazing people. Even with its boisterous nature the moot also makes room for talks of importance. we discuss or stance for the future and the goals we wish to achieve, we appoint new orators if needed and decide the way out future should fly.
Some call us archaic... we know better.
Our knowledge lives through the generations, our discoveries are our treasures. We only share our wealth with those that know how to appreciate it, and protect it from the greedy and vicious. Our oral traditions still hold strong and our books and paper maps are unhackable, most other houses barely even know how to interface with them anymore.
Call us archaic... we know better.
Hidden between the reaches of space are our copious amounts of AstroCaches; care packages and messenges left from one Pyxis to another. Most of our AstroCaches hold some fuel, rations, and can hold a small amount of messages to either be taken by Echo's to be moved or to inform the house in general.
Most of our youth get taught the way to find these cashes early on in live but it is not until they find themselves stranded between the stars that they truly start to admire their ingenuity. Telling anyone that is not a Pyxis of the way to find these cashes is only reserved for the most trusted of allies.
No one knows who started the trend but at one point in Pyxis history young seekers would start to make stickers of the places they'd seen during the many hours of Spike drill travel they had to endure and hid them throughout the Sector. Many AstroCaches now hold a generous amount of stickers for new Seekers to spread throughout Acheron Rho.
