Purrs and Spurs is a Tarleton State University organization run by the students that is dedicated to caring and advocating for the feral and stray cats found on campus. We often perform trap, neuter, and release (TNR) of our campus felines and uphold the regular feeding of the cats during the evenings. Our mission is to create a strong foundation of support for the colonies of cats on campus. We are a volunteer and donation based organization that utilizes funds for medical bills, purchases of feed, TNR supplies, and any additional costs associated with maintaining the group's activities. Purrs and Spurs membership is strongly suggested for those in veterinary, medical, and/or animal conservation related majors as well as for those with a strong fondness for cats that plan on fostering and/or working in shelters.
Regularly feed cats on campus.
Perform Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR) events to spay/neuter and vaccinate campus cats.
Conduct fundraising events to connect with the community.
Care for any injured or ill cats on campus.
Provide education on feral/stray cats to the community.
Assist the community in finding any missing cats or locating the owners of any found felines.
Membership fees are $10 per semester. Plus, a $10 TNR fee per semester. These funds go towards paying for food, shelters, spays/neuters, vaccinations, medical bills, hosting fundraising events, etc. but also make it so if we don't do a TNR, you can just pay to be a normal member.
Members are NOT required to attend all the group meetings and/or fundraising events. Participating in any of the group's activities & paying the membership fees are sufficient. Contact a Purrs and Spurs officer for more details.
Gain knowledge and experience to expand your resume for college, job, scholarship, and internship applications.
Connect with your community and build connections within rescue and veterinary circles.
Gain community service hours through participation in TNRs, community events, and regular feedings.
Allergic to cats? No worries! Most events and activities do not involve direct contact with felines. Many members are allergic and do perfectly fine within the club.
Meetings feature group activities, guest speakers, and special events. Those who cannot attend group meetings regularly have full access to our power points detailing any upcoming events, responsibilities, who our officers are, etc. through our website. Most of our meetings take an informational approach that provides education on topics such as handling feral and stray cats, how to detect and treat common wounds and diseases contracted by feral/stray cats, and how to determine the breed and age of a cat.
