The research in the FD&C/HS Lab (Lab Director: Professor Inseok Hwang) focuses on two directions: fundamental research on the Cyber-Physical System (CPS), which is a complex (networked) system with interacting physical and logical components, using hybrid systems theory, and its applications to safety-critical aerospace systems such as aircraft, spacecraft, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Air Traffic Control (ATC), and multiple-vehicle systems (e.g., swarm of UAS). Note that aerospace systems are good examples of the CPS. For example, a UAS (similarly, aircraft and spacecraft) is composed of an autopilot which is a logical element and a vehicle that is a physical element, thus it is a CPS. Read more
Jooyoung Lee (Ph.D. Student) has been selected as an Amelia Earhart Fellowship recipient for the 2017-18 academic year by Zonta International, which seeks to empower women through service and advocacy. Zonta International established the Amelia Earhart Fellowship in 1938 in honor of legendary female pilot Amelia Earhart to assist the future of women in the fields of aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering. Congratulations!
Prof. Inseok Hwang named University Faculty Scholar!
Prof. Inseok Hwang has been named a University Faculty Scholar. The University Faculty Scholar program was created at Purdue in 1998. Recipients of this honor are tenured associate professors and full professors who have been in that rank for no more than five years and are named in recognition of their scholarship.
University Faculty Scholars are nominated by their academic areas, reviewed by a committee of named and distinguished professors in the College of Engineering that makes a recommendation to the dean, and approved by the provost. They receive funding to support their research. The newly named University Faculty Scholars will begin their five-year terms in the fall of 2017.
Prof. Hwang gave a talk titled "Steps Toward UTM: Concepts and Technologies" in Drone Conference held by Korean government (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation), on March 10, 2017, in Seoul, Republic of Korea. In this talk, the efforts in the United States for research, development, testing, and implementation on UAS Traffic Management (UTM) systems were briefly discussed with the discussion on our lab's research activities on UAS and ATM, both of which could contribute to the development of UTM.
Jayaprakash Suraj Nandiganahalli (Ph.D. Student) was awarded “Hugh W. and Edna M. Donnan Fellowship” for 2017-2018, which is one of the fellowships administered by Purdue College of Engineering. Congratulations, Suraj!
Our lab members have been selected to finalists for the Best Graduate Student Paper Award in the AIAA SciTech 2017 conferences.
Congratulations to Prof. Hwang!
