Some tips regarding open registration. Please keep the following in mind:
Academic advisors CANNOT "get you into" or "take you out of" classes: we are NOT high school guidance counselors.
Adding/dropping classes and being aware of degree requirements is ultimately YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!!
Time Tickets: When You Can Change Your Schedule
Your schedule can be changed when your time ticket opens. For Fall 2025 registration, these will open throughout the week of 7-28-25.
How to Find Your Time Ticket
Your time ticket is in your student profile (accessed through myPurdue) under "Registration Notices." It will look something like the image below:
A typical time ticket for Spring 2025 open registration. The PIN number is greyed out but was present in the original image.
How to Read Your Time Ticket
Using the ticket above as an example, the student can register starting from 2:30 PM on 12-2-2024. Your actual time will vary based on your class standing as well as what semester we are entering (seniors have highest priority).
PIN Numbers
Your PIN was released to you during your registration or All Aboard Purdue appointment (if you had one). It should be visible on your time ticket and ACRF.
If not, it is posted as a backup in one of several places:
In the "Notes" column with a label like "Fall 2025 ACRF/PIN."
In the "Appointment Reports" summary I wrote from your appointment.
In your All Aboard Purdue follow-up email as part of the ACRF attachment.
If you didn't meet with me during pre-registration or All Aboard Purdue, you won't get your PIN and be able to register for classes until you do.
Changing Your Schedule
To change your schedule, you must first clear all holds. For more on holds, click here. Once this is done, follow the instructions below:
LOCK any/all courses that you do NOT want to change. Click the lock icon next to the course.
If you do not lock classes, UniTime may change the sections of some/all classes, or worse, drop you from a course entirely.
In general, it is best to add a class BEFORE dropping one. You CAN be below 12 credits during open registration.
If you want to add a class, see video for how to add a class.
If you want to drop a class, see video for how to drop a class.
If you want to swap sections, see video for how to swap sections.
It is best practice to perform one request at a time AND to wait 2 (two) minutes between requests.
Make sure to pay attention to the Office of the Registrar calendar.
Restricted Courses
CS courses, upper-division MGMT/ECON/OBHR classes, and others are often restricted to declared majors in those disciplines. You will likely need to wait until a certain deadline passes to add those courses.
Full Courses
If a course is full, it is possible that space will change throughout open registration. This is especially true once semester grades post! Some full classes will offer waitlists; the following guidelines will be helpful:
Clicking the magnifying glass icon in Scheduling Assistant will tell you if a class is running a waitlist. This will be in the "WL/Override" column.
This video shows how to waitlist a class.
If a course is NOT running a waitlist, it will be listed as "CLOS" (closed) OR there will be no information about a WL/Override. Your only option here is to wait for space to open.
Do NOT email professors asking for space in the class - they do NOT control this!
Research Classes; Changing to Pass/No Pass
If you want to add research classes after you have spoken with faculty members and confirmed that you are able to join their research, this video will show you how to add research courses.
During open registration, you can add research courses and change grade mode (from graded to pass/no pass; from regular grade mode to honors, etc.). Remember that degree requirements (e.g. MA 16100, STAT 35000, etc.) cannot be taken as pass/no pass!
