As contained in the CHED Memorandum Order No. 15, which stipulates the Policies, Standards, and Guidelines for Graduate Programs, the Graduate School proposal of renaming and revising the Master of Arts in Economics Program to Master of Science in Economics Program and was approved through Board Resolution No. 2368 Series of 2020.

The Revised Curriculum were benchmark from different University in the country and outside the country who are offering Graduate Program in the field of Economics. These universities include De Lasalle University, Lehigh University-USA, Manchester University, University of Asia & Pacific, Ateneo De Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, and University of the Philippines.

Experts in the discipline, practitioners from business and industry, alumni, faculty, and senior students convened to revise the curriculum. Also. a survey was conducted by the Program to compare the existing M.A. Economics curriculum with the updated CHED thrusts, policies, and standards, as well as with those institutions recognized as COE/COD, and topranking universities in the world.

CURRICULUM REVISION PROCEDURE

The Master of Science in Economics program curriculum revision was based on systematic procedures. Firstly, the program curriculum was developed based on the curricular development guidelines released by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) after which the Program Curriculum Evaluation Committee (DCEC), chaired by the Program Chairperson, and composed of experts in the discipline, practitioners from business and industry, alumni, faculty, and senior students convened and revised the curriculum.

Next, the PCEC reviewed and evaluated the curriculum based on the objectives of the University Curriculum Evaluation Committee (UCEC), headed by the OVPAA. Furthermore, benchmarking was done through a survey that was conducted by the Master of Science Economics to compare the existing curriculum with the updated CHED thrusts, policies, and standards, as well as with those institutions recognized as COE/COD, vis-a-vis PRC rules and policies, AACCUP curricular standards, and the professional organizations’ curricular guidelines.

At the graduate school level, the Graduate School Curriculum Evaluation Committee (GCEC), chaired by the Dean of the GS, reviewed and improved (if needed) the proposed curriculum submitted by the PCED and endorsed it to the UCEC for further review and approval.

THE M.S. ECONOMICS PROGRAM CURRICULUM

The revised curriculum of Master of Science in Economics is in accordance with the mandates of CHED Memorandum Order No. 15 Series of 2019 that prescribed at least 24 units of coursework and 6 units of Thesis Writing or a total of at least 30 units. The Master of Science in Economics Program are composed of 23 percent Core Courses (10 units), 40 percent Major Courses (17 units), 21 percent (9 units) electives, and 14 percent Thesis (6 units).

The Core Courses includes Analytics for Applied Economics and Business, Advanced Microeconomics 1, and Advanced Macroeconomics. Meanwhile, the Major Courses are composed of Advanced Macroeconomics 2, Advanced Microeconomics 2, Advanced Econometrics, Big Data Econometrics, and Economic Research. Moreover, the students are allowed to take at least three electives from the list of electives offered by the program, and students should pass the comprehensive examination and six units Thesis Writing for the conferment of the degree.
