The Master of Science in Economics in collaboration with the Department of Economics’s Extension and Community Involvement Committee, with the help and support of its faculty members, formulated and implemented extension services for the partner communities, conducted a joint program entitled Adopt-A-Barangay Program and Kaunlarang Entreprenuryal in response to the recommendations and results of the socioeconomic profiling study.
The Department of Economics and MS Economics program identified Barangay 629, Zone 63, Dist. VI of the City of Manila as its adopted barangay because of its proximity to the PUP and it is one of the partner communities of the University (as is documented by a Memorandum of Understanding between Brgy. 629 and CSSD-PUP). Brgy. 629 was selected to be one of the priority communities of EMO and CSSD that can avail benefits from the research, seminars, workshops, and gift-giving activities that were conducted.
In addition to the extension services offered by the program to the partner - communities, the faculty were also involved in extension activities outside the University.
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the M.S. Economics program and the Department of Economics quickly responded to the needs of the adopted communities most especially in Brgy. 629. The Department of Economics and MS Economics program and the Economics Alumni Association felt it is necessary to motivate Brgy. 629 to fight against the spread of COVID-19 by donating alcohol and face shields.
In addition, the Department of Economics and MS Economics program faculty also regularly visited these barangays to assess their situations and to give them the much-needed moral support during these hard times brought about by the pandemic and the destruction due to the strong typhoons that have recently affected the country. They also delivered lectures on the role and importance of record keeping. They showed and guided the barangay officials on the proper way of bookkeeping and documentation.

On a final note, everyone concerned and involved in these activities realized the value of increased information dissemination. The Department of Economics and MS Economics program's regular visits and meetings with the barangay heightened awareness and rapport between the University and its barangay beneficiaries. The PUP, through the Department of Economics and MS Economics program, we're able to take on its role as the steward of its partner communities, by not just transferring knowledge, but also by offering a listening ear and extending a helping hand in times of need.
