The College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management is one of the best performing colleges of the University. Today, after a notable use of tenacity in the field of tourism, hospitality and transportation management, it has become a college that fosters competitiveness, critical thinking, innovation and creativity, one that strives to be a pillar of continued excellence in the field of guest/tourist service quality. It offers undergraduate programs that prepare future professionals of this country to become globally competitive but still advocating its roots, imbued with the needed skills and competencies to become excellent citizens of the nation. This belief of the College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management dates back to the birth of the Manila business school or MBS in 1904 and became the training ground for students for either government services or entrepreneurship, offering courses in typing bookkeeping as the Nagar fee and the Legger fee, in addition to the prescribed intermediate curriculum.
In 1908, MBS was renamed Philippine School of Commerce or BSc and affiliated with the Philippine Normal School from 1933 to 1946. BSC then became the Philippine College of Commerce or BCC in 1978. It organized the 4-Year Bachelor in Hotel and Restaurant Management where the Department of Hotel and Restaurant Management was formed under the College of Business Administration and Cooperatives (CBAC). Café Malaya, the in-house training coffee shop/restaurant was then inaugurated on the Ground Floor of the De Vega Bldg., of the A. Mabini Campus.

In 1980, the revised BHRM Curriculum was commended by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) because of its responsiveness to the call of the times. In 1982, the department reaped its first batch of graduates coinciding with the start of the ‘learn and earn’ concept. By 1986, the university administration converted the DHRM to Institute of Hotel and Restaurant Management where it was envisioned in the future as a stand-alone college. In 1988, through the efforts of President Nemesio E. Prudente, the GSIS granted the Hasmin Bldg to PUP where it housed the Institute of Hotel and Restaurant Management. It later joined the College of Business, where it joined other departments such as the Department of Tourism and Transportation Management.
By the year 2000, through the recommendation of the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities (AACCUP) and President Ofelia M. Carague, the College of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management was formed with the DHRM and DTTM as its departments. During this time, in 2002, the BHRM Program already passed its Level 1 Accreditation from the AACCUP. In 2003, the HRM Department celebrated its 25 years of training its future hospitality professionals. A year after, the 1st Skills Summit (PUP’s version of the Chefs on Parade) was held at the PUP Gymnasium. Similarly, during this year, from BHRM, the course was now renamed to BSHRM.
In 2006, meanwhile, the department was awarded the Level 2 Accreditation by AACCUP. During this time, the focus was on building the psychomotor skills of the students primarily those which they can gain their NC2 from TESDA, events handling and the introduction to recreation and wellness. Because of this, in 2011, the curriculum was again revised and the name of the course changed from BSHRM to now the BS Hospitality Management. This lead to a broader approach in enriching the skills, knowledge and attitudes of its students. This was also the year where the department hauled in a lot of accolades from different organizations as students became champions in different competitions, such as the Chefs on Parade where PUP won in the Culinary Trivia Contest.
In 2012, because of the changes through the years, the college was renamed from College of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management (CTHRM) to College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management (CTHTM). In 2014, the course was re-accredited for its Level 2 Status as during the period, the university experienced a lot of challenges. Amid the challenges, the research culture was reinvigorated in the college, specifically in the Department of Hospitality Management when the faculty immersed and went into different fora, colloquia and conventions highlighting their research works. The faculty started presenting in national conferences and eventually landed in the international platform when one of its faculty members presented in the Asia Pacific Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators (APacCHRIE) Conference in Malaysia.
This was made sustainable as not only faculty but also students participated in the research activities. During this time, the extension activities also complimented the research efforts as it adopted the first barangays which participated in its livelihood programs. Tapping the research works and converting it into extension projects made it more comprehensive and relevant to the needs of its stakeholders. These research practices and initiatives were accompanied and made available to other faculty members when the Society of Academic Researchers for Tourism and Hospitality-Philippines (SOAR-THP, later on known as PARTH) was formed with a PUP HM Faculty at its helm. During 2017-2018, at last the Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) was awarded by the Commission of Higher Education, solidifying the thrust of the department in delivering quality in its curricular offerings. In 2018, all of these initiatives were capped off when the program was awarded its Level 3 Phase 1 Accreditation. A year after, the department showed that it possesses the necessary requirements to be awarded Level 3 Phase 2 Accreditation.
