A thousand different voices, drinking knowledge from the same inherited cup. Publia Cantos is a journal for writers who believe the tradition is not a cage but a wellspring. We publish poetry and prose from voices who have read deeply enough to know that compression, allusion, and form are not obstacles between writer and feeling, they are often the only vehicle capable of carrying it. We are not interested in whether a poem could have been written in 1860 or 1960 or this morning. We are interested in whether it is alive. We have no use for the assumption that the old modes are exhausted simply because they are old, nor for the opposite vanity that anything difficult is therefore profound. We want the image that earns its weight, the line that trusts the reader, the argument that doesn't explain itself into flatness. Our contributors range across style and form embodied lyric, civic elegy, mythopoeic compression, essay, the long accumulative line, the short crystallized one. What unifies the journal is not a house style but a house conviction: that the dead are not finished speaking, and that anyone willing to actually listen to them will have more to say, not less.
