Frequently asked questions

What is the PA?

PA stands for Parents Association. We are made up parents & caregivers of PS 889 students. Our main goals are fundraising, funding enrichment programs, holding events and celebrations throughout the year, and supporting our principal, teachers, and school staff.

Sounds great. How can I join?

If you're a parent or caregiver of an 889 student, you're already a member! We don't collect dues, and outside of the officers on the Board, we don't hold elections to become a member. PA members serve as Class Parents, Enrichment club volunteers, members of Committees, and most importantly — volunteers at our events and fundraisers throughout the year. Fill out our Family Survey to get started!

When (and how often) are the meetings?

The PA meets for a General Meeting once a month during the school year. These meetings are usually held the last Tuesday of the month, and they're open to all members of the PA. We also meet as an Executive Committee the week before the General meeting, on the third Wednesday of the month, to align on agenda and other business. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings, as listeners only. Please stay tuned for more information on Konstella about specific meeting times and locations.

Where do we spend the money we raise?

The PA funds enrichment clubs and activities for all grades, supports the school with specific funding requests for educational programs, fills curriculum gaps, and more. We also host celebration events throughout the year to give our children a unique and special experience at PS 889 that enhances our school's culture.

I'm worried about overcommitting myself.

We've all been there; feeling this way is totally normal when first getting involved in the PA. We promise that you won't bite off more than you can chew, because we're a supportive and collaborative group that makes sure to help one another as we go. Just start with something small and see how it feels!
