Four OPTIONAL workshops will be offered to share useful information and skill sets to guide you throughout the project. If you cannot attend, please be sure to review notes/presentations below.

Collaboration is one of the goals of this project and thus, families are encouraged to attend workshops and share ideas with each other, "borrow" each other's materials, learn to use tools and equipment (sewing machines, glue guns,) and more!

**You can still be part of the show if you do not / cannot attend workshops - but you must complete the REGISTRATION FORM.**

• Decide if they (and YOU) want to be a part of this fun project... and if so, register them asap! [There are only 20 spots available.]
• Begin thinking about which theme you would like to be a part of: Waste, Water, Energy, Healthy Schools (Indoor Air Quality) or Schoolyard Habitats (Gardens)
• Start collecting/gathering/choosing materials to see what you have to work with (sometimes this helps you fit into a theme)

Notes From Workshop:

• Weaving! Any materials that have lots of holes, you can use it to weave in just about anything... from ribbons to fabric or pieces of plastic bags to make beautiful, textured patches.
• Zip ties are amazing. Joy showed us how you can punch things like shipping peanuts through it (think food on bbq skewers) to make a fun bracelet. You can also connect zip ties to make longer strings of items or you can make fun links.
• Alternatives to sewing. You can bind things together with (1) pipe cleaners, (2) hot glue gun, (3) velcro, (4) double sided tape, (5) duct tape, (6) stapler, and yes (7) zip ties!
• Cut holes for arms. Anything you can wrap around your body (huge paper bag, plastic garbage bag, 2 file folders - see Philip below,) cut two holes and you have a base to build your costume off of.
• Card stock for structure. You can use 80lb+ card stock to form shape for hats, tops, sleeves, etc. Bend it as needed and add things to it with glue for example.
• Make a tunic. If you fold in half a large piece of material (large sheet, large plastic bag, etc.) and cut a hole on top, your head can go through that and you would just tape the sides together to make a top.
• Stick it on! Using double sided foam tape, you can tape things like bottle caps and and hard plastic on to plastic.

At this workshop, we reviewed the five themes for this year's collection - Pathways to Sustainability and learned about how to write a narrative for your design/costume. See below for the presentation.

• Work on finishing up your design/costume! [Take photos of your "work in progress" and send to wongt@nwf.org]
• Ask if you need help, need materials, etc.
• Begin thinking about the narrative of your design. It only needs to be about 3-4 sentences long. [ See slides for reference/examples. ]
• Fill out forms / waivers in preps for the day of the show
• At the next and final workshop on Mon, April 23, the following are due:
  • Photos of completed design/outfit + narrative
  • Completed waivers and trip forms (if applicable)

For this meeting:

• All forms are due... hard copies will be provided at the meeting. Otherwise, please sign/scan and email or take photo and text signed copies.
• Confirm theme student models belong to: Waste, Water, Energy, Schoolyard Habitat (Gardens) or Healthy Schools (Air Quality)
• Submit written narrative of outfit/costume or be prepared to complete it at the meeting!

REHEARSAL: There is an option for a PS34 teacher to bring students directly to Bushwick Inlet Park after dismissal (@2:35p); family members may then join at 5pm, when event begins. If you wish to do this, download “Trip Consent Form,” sign, scan and email to wongt@nwf.org. Otherwise, parents/guardian MUST arrive at Bushwick Inlet Park with child at 3:30pm!

OUTFITS: Parents are to bring outfits to event when the arrive at 5:00pm UNLESS otherwise instructed!
